Beautiful new bundles of joy can sleep up to 17 hours out of every 24, and a comfy, safe and restful snoozing place is essential. So to help you get sleepytime sorted for the early months, we’ve done the research and shortlisted the best baby bassinets available in Australia.

If you’re planning on having your baby sleep in your room for the first six to 12 months, as recommended by Red Nose, a bassinet is a great option. It’s easier than having to assemble and disassemble a cot and it’s portable so you can move it around during the day.

What to consider when buying a baby bassinet

There are a few things to take into account when you’re shopping for a baby bassinet in Australia, including safety standards – or the lack thereof!

Safety: There are actually no Australian standards for bassinets or bedside sleepers. But there are some important things to be aware of, as explained by Red Nose Australia:

  • Make sure the bassinet has breathable zones on all four sides.
  • Check that the bassinet is sturdy once assembled.
  • The bassinet needs to be deep enough to stop the baby from falling out – at least 3000mm between the top surface of the mattress and the upper edge of the bassinet enclosure.
  • The mattress should be firm and the correct size for the bassinet. It should be no thicker than 75mm.
  • There should not be any decorative ribbons or trims on the crib or bassinet.
  • Ensure foldable legs are lockable to avoid collapsing.

Bedding:

  • Only use lightweight bedding or safe sleep bags (no hoods) in a baby bassinet. Loose bedding should be firmly tucked in with baby’s arms out.
  • Keep baby’s entire head uncovered. Bedding should only reach baby’s chest.
  • Never leave loose items in a bassinet, like toys or comforters.

  • Wow some of these are so fancy. Our bubbas just used a heirloom wicker basket bassinet that had already seen 3 generations., We just had a new foam mattress cut for it, and bubs only fitted in it for about 6 weeks then they outgrew it for the cot.
